Engineering Pillar I
This panel convenes the technical leads responsible for delivering nuclear-powered submarine capability into Australian service, and for the standards, systems and stewardship beneath it. Discussion covers the task of integrating a design drawn from three nations' technology bases, the through-life configuration control a platform in service for decades demands, and the systems integration challenge spanning combat system, sonar and propulsion. It examines what naval nuclear stewardship asks of a nation standing up its regulatory and safety framework for the first time, the infrastructure engineering required at Osborne and at the west-coast sustainment base, and the technical workforce and qualification standards the programme rests on. The session asks where the hardest engineering risk genuinely sits, and what must be proven before it can be retired.
