Tim Cain, BE(Elec) MSc(Acoustics) FIEAust CPEng NER APAC Engineer IntPE(Aus) has worked in the submarine, surface ship, combat systems and underwater sonar systems domain for over 30 years. He has been involved in a range of major sonar acquisition programs during that time, including the integration, test and sea trials of the original sonar and combat system on-board the Collins Class submarines, delivery of the SEA1390 FFG Upgrade Program Hull Mount, Towed Array and Mine & Obstacle Avoidance Sonar Electronics Cabinet Suite and the development of the SEA1778 Deployable Mine
Counter Measures system architecture. Over his career, Tim has successfully led high technical risk development programs: winning and delivering on several Capability Technology Demonstrator (CTD), Defence Industry Hub (DIH) and recent ASCA Programs – Fibre Laser Sensor, Fibre Optic Towed Array, BlueSentry™ Thin Line Towed Array System and the Single Crystal Hydrophone development to name a few. As UWS Design Authority, Tim is responsible for ensuring the integrity of all technical and engineering activities within the Thales Under Water Systems (UWS) organisation in Australia. This also includes providing direction and co-ordination of Self-Funded Research and Development effort including collaboration with research establishments and universities. In the Rydalmere NSW office, Tim is fortunate to lead a fantastic team of highly skilled, multidisciplinary technical and engineering staff, comprising sonar system architects and systems engineers, mechanical and electronics engineers, acoustic transducer designers, signal processing specialists and software developers. Tim is a degree qualified Electrical Engineer and holds a Master of Science specialising inAcoustics. He has also completed a Diploma in Project Management (AQF Level 5). Tim is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia and a Charted Professional Engineer
